1.a. Reading TAB’s

Skip this if you know how to read TAB’s.

The electric guitar contains six strings regularly. Every string is represented as one line, and a TAB contains six lines. Although reading TAB’s is easy, I will it explain it step by step.

TAB:

E||——-
B||——-
G||——-
D||——-
A||——-
E||——

The number is marking the fret. Please note: the strings are usually not marked with “E,A,D,G,B,E”.

E||———-
B||———-
G||———-
D||———-
A||———-
E||-1-2-3-4-

You read it like a book from left to right.

  1. Place your index finger unto the first fret on the E string
  2. Pick down
  3. Place your middle finger unto the second fret on the same string
  4. Pick up
  5. Place your ring finger unto the third fret on the same string
  6. Pick down
  7. Place your small finger unto the forth fret on the same string
  8. Pick up

As I said, it is really simple.

Furthermore there are bend ups, hammer ons, pull downs, tremolo, etcetera — their usage varies.
